Standardized data management creates basis for reporting

TIMETOACT implements a higher-level data model in a data warehouse with data integration for TRUMPF Photonic Components.

The efficient management of company data is more important than ever to make decisions and optimize data usage - especially when up to 2 tera-bytes of data are moved daily. TIMETOACT implements a higher-level data model in a data warehouse for TRUMPF Photonic Components and provides the necessary data integration connection with Talend. With this standardized data management, TRUMPF will receive reports based on reliable data in the future and can also transfer the model to other departments.

Initial situation:
  • Non-standardized provision of information, different technical and professional know-how of employees, use of different data systems
  • No higher-level data management in place, therefore no effective collection, storage and processing of company data
  • Slowed data provision and decreasing trust in data
Core requirement:
  • Provision of a BigData and Analytics platform
  • Standardization of processes and tools
Solution:
  • Modeling of a central analytical data model
  • Implementation of the data model in a data warehouse (platform: MS SQLServer)
  • Development of the necessary data integration (platform: Talend)
  • Central provision of the information in a business intelligence frontend (technology: MS PowerBI)
Added value:
  • Platform is already productive for the logistics area and can be transferred to other departments
  • Access to quality-assured, up-to-date information is possible at any time
  • Independent creation of reports by TRUMPF

We are very satisfied with the result. Due to the very close cooperation, challenges could be critically scrutinized and the optimal solution could be found together - a win-win situation for both sides.

Need for a BigData and Analytics Platform

Non-standardized provision of information, different technical and professional know-how of employees, and the use of different data systems and technologies - these were the challenges TRUMPF Photonic Components faced across departments. Because the manufacturer of laser diodes did not have a platform for higher-level data management in place, effective collection, storage and processing of corporate data was impossible. This affected up to 2 terabytes of data moved during the day. Accuracy and long-term traceability of data was not possible, and analytical queries sometimes pushed the system to its breaking point. This led not only to slower data provision, but above all to declining confidence in the data.

The core requirement for TRUMPF was to provide a BigData and Analytics platform for effective data management.

"With the new platform, we want to standardize our processes and tools in order to effectively manage our enormous data load and create meaningful reports," says Thomas Göttl, Head of IT at TRUMPF Photonic Components.

On the one hand, the platform had to be able to serve individual requirements across departments, and on the other hand, it had to be able to be integrated into the technical system environment. Analytical work, planning and forecasts should be possible on the basis of trustworthy data, and dependencies on the know-how of individual employees should be avoided.

We already knew the TIMETOACT experts from the past. The mix of analytics know-how and Talend expertise was the perfect basis for us to work together.

Interaction of several partial solutions

In the fall of 2020, TIMETOACT was commissioned for the implementation of a Big Data and Analytics platform as well as for Talend consulting. The overall project comprised several partial solutions that build on each other:

1. Modeling of a central analytical data model.

The starting point for successful project implementation was detailed workshops with all stakeholders at TRUMPF to fully capture the requirements for the analytical platform. Based on this, the appropriate data model was defined and developed by TIMETOACT's analytics architects.

2. Implementation of the data model in a data warehouse (platform: MS SQLServer):

While in the initial and conception phase the term "data lake" was still used to implement the data model, the requirement changed to a "data warehouse" due to new findings from the workshops. The reason for this was that technologically it was possible to do without the collection of real-time data or unstructured data. The classic layer modeling in the data warehouse provides a central, traceable "single point of truth" that can be used by common BI tools for querying and can thus be integrated into TRUMPF's system environment. In addition, the data warehouse is scalable and can be used for many other requirements in the future.

3. Development of the necessary data integration (platform: Talend)

After the realization of the data model in the data warehouse, the development of the data integration processes began with the help of Talend. The platform enables automated, business and technically coordinated data supply from different sources into the data warehouse. The data is thus always traceable and available - regardless of the availability of upstream systems or people. In parallel, TRUMPF employees were trained in the use of Talend in connection with the data model.

4. Central provision of information in a business intelligence front end (technology: MS PowerBI)

The TRUMPF data management team itself provides the reports in PowerBI and the reportings. The reportings are based exclusively on the reliable data of the data warehouse and can be used, among other things, for production status queries.

TIMETOACT creates data basis for further processes

Due to the pandemic, the entire project was carried out remotely and was completed in the fall of 2021: The platform is productive for the logistics area and is to follow for other specialist areas. Data integration processes run regularly and end users are provided with information. With this technical and functional platform, access to quality-assured, up-to-date information is possible at any time in order to make the necessary business decisions.

The clear specifications from TRUMPF and the clear distribution of roles and tasks on both partner sides supported the successful project implementation. TIMETOACT's experts accompanied the project from requirements gathering to the realization of the data warehouse to data integration - supervised by the architects, who also designed the initial workshops. In the future, the manufacturer of laser diodes will be able to further develop the processes and transfer them to other departments on its own, thanks to the know-how gained from TIMETOACT.

Data hub with GROUP support

The data model and data integration have already been expanded to include sales data, and the introduction of data governance (data documentation) for the data model is currently in progress. For new tasks, such as the implementation of a data governance solution in other departments or the data science platform planned for later, TIMETOACT's analytics experts will continue to be available as partners and consultants.

TRUMPF is currently working on the real-time connection of the upstream systems with the help of TIMETOACT experts: Together with X-INTEGRATE, the experts in the TIMETOACT GROUP for process integration, EAI and data hubs, among others, the existing Talend platform is being expanded to include the real-time components. A data hub is created between the operational systems, which can then communicate via REST API.

Die in der Zusammenarbeit entstandene analytische Plattform wird zudem die Entwicklung und Produktion von Quantencomputerchips unterstützen.
